The Executive Session on Police Leadership (ESPL) began in late 2010. It was underwritten by a grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance (US DOJ) in collaboration with St. Petersburg College’s Center for Public Safety Innovation (FL). Taking the long view, the project directors recruited a group of multi-disciplined public safety professionals to develop innovative thinking on the future of policing. The story of the project through 2014 is contained in An Overview of the Approach.
This web site launched in 2014. The Bureau of Justice Assistance awarded the Executive Session team a new grant in November 2015. Over the years, dozens of experienced and rising police leaders and public safety practitioners have made innovative, timely contributions to the site. In October 2019, BJA funding ended and the web site has been renamed Police Leadership: A Resource for Self and Group Development. It will house the work of ESPL and will make all of its products accessible to organizations and individuals.
